First Casualty

Well, it was bound to happen. I just thought it would happen later than just a few weeks into our retirement. On Tuesday afternoon we all took a walk on the dunes. Rusty and I were standing on the crest of this huge dune contemplating running down the straight drop (the problem isn't going down, but then having to climb up a steep wall to get up out of the bowl of the dune) when all of us sudden Whisky takes off. She does this incredible face plant at the bottom coming up totally covered in sand. Rusty and I look at each other in shock and then down we go as well. She was trying to spit the sand out of her mouth. I had some water with me and we got it out of her nose and mouth. Early the next morning she wakes me up because she's shivering uncontrollably - it wasn't because she was cold, but because she couldn't open her eyes.  It must have hurt like hell. I took a hot compress to them and got out some saline drops and tried to rinse them as best I could. I gave her a pain pill and darkened the bedroom so there was no light. A couple hours later it was obvious that she needed to see the vet so we called one in town. This is her leaving the RV to go to the vet:

Her left eye was totally shut and her right eye was rolling back into her head. The vet was awesome. They rinsed out her eyes really good and then deadened them with some numbing stuff. Then they put in some glow in the dark goo and looked at them under a florescent light. Luckily there was no ulcer or other damage. The vet took advantage of her eyes being numb and cleaned them out really good to make sure there was no more sand (kind of creepy but Whisky held still for all of it) and she sent us home with some eye cream to put in her eyes for the next week.

She's doing great this morning. She doesn't seem to be in pain anymore and she's had a good appetite so I think we've survived our first casualty without too much drama.

Rusty and I still don't know what possessed her to go down that dune. It was like a straight drop. Rusty thinks she was just having too much fun and she, like us, wanted to see what would happen if we went straight down in the sand.

Needless to say, she's banned from the dunes for now. However, Rusty and I are still enjoying them. Tomorrow we head out for Malibu again for Eddie and Christine's wedding.

Ever Wonder

How those huge pine trees grow on the steep cliff walls?  I know I have, but we found out in Glenwood Canyon: As you can clearly see from this hidden camera photo, the mountain regurgitates the trees onto the cliff walls. Inquiring minds want to know... xoxxo Julie
