Bitter Sweet

We took care of business in Grand Junction and have moved on to Glenwood Springs. It's a bit sad being back where my dad lived. He was so excited for our plan to sell the house and buy the RV to travel around in. I know he would have been here with us tonight if he was still alive.

We're at the Glenwood Canyon Resort just outside of Glenwood Springs, a couple of miles from the hot springs and about four miles from my dad's place. They've got river rafting and zip lines here, but so far all we've done is check in and check out the No Name Bar & Grill. We sat down at the outdoor bar and within 10 minutes a bald eagle flew by us. It hung out on a tree a across the river for over a half and hour. I don't think I've ever seen a bald eagle in Colorado. Rusty went back to the RV to get the binoculars so we could watch it.

Tonight we head to the Glenwood Springs Hot Springs Pool. This is actually where Rusty and I spent our honeymoon over 38 years ago. We were young and stupid and didn't think to ask them any questions when we rented the suite at the top of the lodge. Of course it was the one of two days out of the year when they drain the pool. But we did get to stay in the suite at the lodge. Now it's where the business offices are and you can't stay there at all, you have to stay in the cardboard hotel they setup across the street. So we enjoyed the suite but missed out on the pool. Since then we've spent a lot of time in the pool. We would come daily when we visited my dad. He wouldn't go in the winter, but he loved the summer and the sun and would hang out here for hours. They used to have a high dive and a low dive but they got rid of the high dive. I only had the courage to do it once. I'll do the low dive all day long.

This is my favorite hot springs. The pool is huge and the water is the perfect temp. If you don't like the smell of sulfur you probably wouldn't like this pool, but I swear it cures just about any ache, pain or mosquito bites (I have several from yesterday's trip near the Black Canyon of the Gunnison).

Here's a picture of where we honeymooned:

It's the part that now says "Spa of the Rockies". This picture wasn't taken in summer, but in winter. The hot springs are open year round and I've definitely taken advantage of it. They opened a new hot springs west of this one called Iron Mountain, but this one is still my favorite.

The best part about being in Glenwood is the temperature is about 20 degrees cooler. We're all pretty happy about that!

Ever Wonder

How those huge pine trees grow on the steep cliff walls?  I know I have, but we found out in Glenwood Canyon: As you can clearly see from this hidden camera photo, the mountain regurgitates the trees onto the cliff walls. Inquiring minds want to know... xoxxo Julie
