Good Morning and Goodbye Work

Today is my last day at my job. Rusty has been driving me crazy since January 2016 wanting me to retire NOW NOW NOW, but he patiently waited while I tried to finish up everything I wanted to accomplish and to pad my retirement pension with what I call the "Carlo fund". That's so I can buy whatever I want for our grandson without Rusty going "do you really need to buy that". The answer, my dear husband, is no I don't but I WANT to - so now I can. Unfortunately, I didn't finish a couple of things I wanted to at work so I'm leaving a bit of a mess and I can hear them cursing my name as they work on it. Ah, well, that's how it goes. The last one to leave the job gets the blame for everything that goes wrong until someone else leaves.

I can't believe I've worked at UCLA for over 31 years and that I have been working steadily since I was 15. I figured I've spent more time with the people at work than I have with my own family. I'm going to miss the people I've worked with but not the drama or the politics. No more on call 24/7, no more feeling like all the hard work we do isn't even appreciated. I have always said, if you're good at IT no one knows it because things run smoothly. They don't see everything that goes on behind the scenes to make that happen so it's a bit of a thankless job. But as I sit here this morning, instead of logging in at work to see what's going on, I'm doing what I want. Today is my last day at work. Do you hear me world?  TODAY IS MY LAST DAY!

And as Rusty said yesterday, we have this beautiful new home that can take us anywhere we want to go on the continent. Visit friends, family and find our bit of heaven on earth. This morning, as I look out at the Pacific Ocean, I hear the Red Hot Chili Peppers in my head:

Road trippin' with my two favorite allies
Fully loaded we've got snacks and supplies
It's time to leave this town it's time to steal away
Let's go get lost anywhere in the U.S.A.
Let's go get lost, let's go get lost

Well, I have to admit, we don't really have a lot of food yet, but that's only because we haven't hit the grocery store and stocked up. Since we had to clear everything out of the house including the fridge, and we only had a small cooler to store the perishables, we're a bit light in that department. But a trip to the grocery store will remedy that. And since we're in Malibu right now, there are oodles of wonderful restaurants within quick proximity which has been good since I drove in to work yesterday from the RV.

xoxo
Julie

  1. Good blogs, both of you. I can remember being very happy in Paul's Chinook at a park on the road from Miami to Key West, riding bikes, etc. All you need is love!

The Five Words You've All Been Wondering if I'll Say

It happened the morning we were getting ready to leave Glenwood Canyon.  It had been an emotional week. We were doing all the things we did with my dad. Even Rusty got misty eyed at one of my dad's favorite restaurants. But the thing that I stupidly didn't realize was that we were there on my dad's birthday. He would have been 85. That hit me pretty hard but I guess I didn't realize it until we were getting ready to leave. Don't get me wrong, I love Glenwood Canyon. It's one of the most amazing places and it's no surprise why my dad loved living there. Between all the emotions and the fact that I woke up the morning we were leaving to a tweaked back, I think it was just too much. Rusty had gotten up to prep the sewer and, water and electrical outside and I was working on prepping the inside. Making the bed is a contortionist's nightmare without a tweaked back to say the least but I got it made. Then I start to notice blood on the floor. I figure the dog...

Zmudowski State Beach

Otherwise known as our slice of heaven.

Pacific Dunes - Oceano

This RV park is at the end of a road in the middle of farm land. The RV park itself isn't much to look at, but just a few feet away is the entrance to the Dunes.  Rusty and I took our chairs out last night to watch the sunset: Whisky thought it was the coolest place ever! We had to hike for quite a ways in order to get a view of the ocean but we found the tallest dune and headed up to the top. Our cute little folding chairs were hilarious as once you sat down in them, they sank up to the seat in the sand. After hanging out for a while we thought, let's see if we can get all the way to the ocean and off we took off again. There was some growth (beautiful yellow flowers and some type of scrub) and after hiking for about a half mile we popped out on the beach. It's the beach you can camp on and ride ATV's and dune buggies and where did we pop out?  At the friggin' trash pile. We hiked a bit north and set up our chairs. Then the attack of the huge kille...
